leftwm on FreeBSD 13

Recently I discovered leftwm and I wanted to try it on my FreeBSD machine. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. leftwm-check tells me everything is fine. I'm using the basic_lemonbar theme. When I start exec dbus-launch leftwm I only see the background image and the only working keybinding is the one for my terminal emulator. Nothing else seems to work. In the console from where I initiated startx I read the following:

Does somebody run leftwm successfully or encountered the same problem on FreeBSD?

I'm using FreeBSD 13.0-RELEASE-p4 amd64 with a generic kernel and installed leftwm version 0.2.11 from the binary package repository (latest).
